We follow the BC’s Early Learning Framework to support the learning of our children. During the three-hour preschool program in Hillview, children would actively participate in free play, circle time, snack time and outside play.

A Typical Day

Free Play   Children are invited to play in any stations that they choose upon arrival. Here are the choices to explore throughout the day:

  • Water table and sand table
  • Art tables and playdough table
  • Science table
  • Puzzle and small manipulative toys
  • Blocks, trains, cars and large building toys
  • Housekeeping area
Circle Time   After getting all children settled, there is a 20 minute circle time to sing hello and talk about the plan for the day. This includes stories, rhymes, finger plays, dances, songs and musical instruments. If there is a special project or an upcoming holiday, they are guided to do an activity at the circle table.  Throughout the year, there is a class buddy journal homework that encourages children and families at home to build literacy, creativity and social-emotional learning. They get to bring it to school and share the journal experiences at circle time.

Snack Time  We believe that children feel empowered as they make choices for themselves. Therefore, we would like to have the children decide when their tummies are hungry and ready for a snack. They bring nutritious snacks from home. For special occasions, we hold Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day parties in the school. Parents sign up and bring in food for children.

Outside Play   We have a big and beautiful outdoor setting that provides us with endless opportunities for exploring outside. Children are invited to ride on a variety of toy vehicles, tricycles, scooters and wagons in the spacious bicycle riding area. They can also play in the large playground, soccer field and woods.

Enrichment Programs

Fieldtrips    Going on fieldtrips is a fun and interactive way to develop children’s interests. The place is often connected to what we are currently working on in class, eg. learn about bugs in the springtime at the Lynn Valley Ecology Centre, North Vancouver. Throughout the year, we attend children’s theater plays on Granville Island, Vancouver. We are also keen to go on fieldtrips within Burnaby, such as grocery stores, fire halls, pumpkin patches, skating arena, gymnastic hall, bird sanctuary, animal rescue society, etc. Enhanced by teacher-parent collaboration, fieldtrips are amazing learning experiences for our children!

Outdoor Preschool    It occurs once a month to explore the nature in the woods through different seasons. Children are guided by the teacher to observe plants, trees, insects and birds in the woods. They make bird feeders, plant flowers and grow vegetables in the preschool garden (currently under construction).
